Our first wrestler has officially punched their ticket to the Excel. Freshman Carol Stevenson won the girls individual section tournament to become the first girl in Maple Grove Wrestling history to qualify for the state tournament. Carol ‘Cici’ is on quite the stretch as she also won the 9th grade girls section tournament and followed that up by taking home the crown at 9th grade state as well. I know she’s excited to see her name on the wall – and we’re excited to see if she can put a number (for a state tournament place) next to that name.
Also placing at the 9th state tournament was Aushika Davis who took 6th, and Lincoln Rudek who finished 8th.
For the rest of our line-up this two-week stretch is hard to wrap my mind around. The team that showed up this past week was a completely different squad than the one that competed at Andover the prior week. It was difficult to watch us struggle to the extent we did against Andover and Anoka – but ultimately, I think it was a necessary wake-up call.
This past Friday at Blaine was a fun night of wrestling and I’m extremely proud of the way we competed on Saturday at J.V. Conference. We compete in one of the strongest (and deepest) wrestling conferences in the state. There is no doubt there are a number of above average Varsity wrestlers who compete in this tournament yearly. Prior to this season we haven’t had a JV Conference champion since 2020 or a finalist since 2023. Here were our place winners at J.V. Conference:
Most of our wrestlers won’t compete again this season (unless they compete at MN/USA state) so wrestling well here had to feel good. I know it felt good to be in the corner and support their efforts.
The upcoming weeks will surpass even our most exciting and intense matches this season. You aren’t going to want to miss it. Here’s the information you’ll want to know for the upcoming TWO weeks’ worth of the wrestling season:
Team Sections at Park Center. Bus leaves at 3:15p. Weigh-ins at 4p. Wrestling begins at 5p. We will likely wrestle Osseo in the first round.
Individual Sections at St. Michael. Bus leaves Maple Grove at 7a. Weigh ins at 8a and wrestling begins at 10a.
Many wrestlers are now watching their matches on Mat Boss each week – which is awesome! This is a great opportunity for kids to learn from their matches and improve at a much faster rate than would otherwise be possible. Watching back matches can be a great learning tool and is highly encouraged. Please let me know if you/your wrestler has not been able to get in to Mat Boss and would like to do so or if you have any other questions. Thanks.
For many of our wrestlers it all comes down to these final few weeks. We plan to stress that these matches will be scored the same way as any throughout the season and once the first whistle blows it’s the same as any other match. The reality is that every wrestler is going to feel a little different than they have. For those that have and will earn the chance to compete in intense situations, Pressure is a Privilege. Many of our wrestlers have an awesome opportunity to reach their goals and earn career highlights. I’m confident we’ll see Crimson wrestlers rise to the occasion. Looking forward to it! Let’s Go Crimson Wrestling!
Let me know if anybody has any questions.
