Crimson Wrestlers, Managers, and Families-
Week Ten Recap:

It’s a process for a wrestler to reach their full potential.  It requires consistent action and a growth mindset.  When an athlete attends and gives their best effort at practice daily, they become very fun to cheer for – and over time good things will happen.  We have a bunch of wrestlers who are very fun to cheer for – and it’s exciting to see good things happening.

We had a great four days of practice.  However, Friday nights dual did not go as we had hoped.  As I said – It’s a Process.  Fortunately, our guys had the opportunity to get right back at it on Saturday.

We had two wrestlers competing at 9th grade state and they both brought home hardware.  Thomas Schlangan finished 3rd at 138 – with his only loss coming in heart breaking fashion in the semi-finals to the eventual champion.  Thomas was up by two with 5 seconds left in the match.  He gave up a takedown and lost in sudden victory.  However, Thomas rebounded with a convincing 6-2 victory to bring home the 3rd place finish.

Chuck Langama also brought home a medal as he finished 8th at 170.  Chuck lost his first match but then rebounded to win his next two – leading to the top 8 finish.  Congrats to both Thomas and Chuck on an outstanding 9th grade sections and state tournament showing!  They set a standard their younger teammates can strive for in the coming years.

At South St. Paul we had 11 wrestlers competing on JV and came away with three champions (Seventh grader Damian Seubert, Eighth grader James Engle, and Sophomore Chase Thein).  I didn’t get to see as much of the JV as I would have liked but there is a lot of impressive things happening with those guys and others.  James had a late-drop that was the talk of the JV room – until Chase provided some competition with his blast doubles!  Very fun to see these 11 wrestlers competing and getting better!

We sent out 10 Varsity wrestlers with seven wrestlers earning a place in the 17-team field.  Place winners were Seventh Grader Ethan Hong (8th at 113), Eighth grader Connor Peterson (3rd at 120), Ben Schultz (2nd at 152), Grant Sandell (7th at 160), Hunter Zupke (6th at 182), Ayden Gunnville (6th at 220), and Luis Haro (2nd at Heavyweight).  Hunter and Ayden both picked up their first Career Varsity wins and continue to improve every time they step on the mat.  Ethan and Grant also really impressed me as they were able to learn things from their early matches and successfully apply them in their later matches.  Ethan, Grant, Hunter, and Ayden all seemed to turn a corner in their ‘process’ and their development should really help solidify our line-up!  Each of these wrestlers (and more) really exemplify the ‘growth mindset’ it takes for a wrestler to reach their full potential.

Lots of good things happening throughout the program.  Thank you, parents, for your continued support of these young men and for all you do to enhance their wrestling experience!  It should be another exciting week.

Here are the details you’ll need to know:

Mat Boss Video Access:

Many wrestlers are now watching their matches on Mat Boss each week – which is awesome!  This is a great opportunity for kids to learn from their matches and improve at a much faster rate than would otherwise be possible.  Watching back matches can be a great learning tool and is highly encouraged.  This is how that is done:

Here is a video showing you how to gain access to your matches:

Lastly please download the Sports Engine App and sign up to receive future communications.  Parents and wrestlers can each sign up to receive future communications and schedule changes through the Sports Engine app by going to Crimson-Wrestling.com.  If you have any challenges with this please text me your email address at 763-913-0601 and I’ll make sure you are added to the app portion.  Please let me know if you have any questions with this as we will use this app for communications throughout the season.

Also, I often post fun pictures or related articles on the Maple Grove High School Wrestling Page on Facebook (along with this article).  If you are a Facebook user please like our page.  Thanks!

Technique Video of the Week:

There are additional opportunities to rack up points from the top position – and this week we plan to incorporate the cradle series from the knees into our practice plans.  Any wrestler who wants to get a head start on understanding this position should check out these videos.

Tuesday is officially February – meaning we are entering the final push of the season.  This is a big week for our team as we work towards peaking at the right time.  The coming weeks are the most exciting of the season (JV Conference, Team Sections, Individual Sections, and the State Tournament).  What better way to get that stretch started then with an intense rivalry dual with a strong section seed on the line?  Should be fun!

As always let me know if anybody has any questions.
