Crimson Wrestlers, Managers, and Families-

Week Nine Recap:

It’s always been the goal to excel at all competition levels (9th grade, JV, Varsity).  This past week offered some of the best competition we see with the dual against a top team in Anoka on Thursday, as well as two high quality tournaments this past Saturday.  We also faced some adversity with health and some challenges associated with no in-person school.

I was proud of the way we competed on all levels – with individuals excelling in each tournament.  The 9th grade tournament included 16 teams and is possibly the most competitive 9th grade section in the state.  We had 11 wrestlers competing and I believe it was a positive experience for all.  By tournaments end we finished with four section place winners in Alex Fox (4th at 94-pounds), Thomas Schlangan (1st at 138-pounds), Noah Fox (4th at 145-pounds) and Chuck Langama (2nd at 170-pounds).  Thomas and Chuck advance to the 9th grade state tournament next weekend and should have their sights set on being 9th grade state place winners.

East Ridge was also a 16-team tournament.  We had 17 wrestlers competing – 12 on JV and 5 on Varsity.  It is so fun to see all of our wrestlers supporting each other throughout the day.  So many of our wrestlers care just as much about their teammates matches as they do about their own.  It’s just a great atmosphere that I’m proud to be part of.

On the JV each of our wrestlers competed hard and got better throughout the day.  We had eight wrestlers take home some hardware including 7th graders Logan Buman (1st), Elijah Hilal (2nd); 8th grader Pryce Toyne (2nd); Sophomores Cole Cyrzan (2nd), Hunter Zupke (2nd), Chase Thein (1st); and Juniors Rufus Bartee (2nd), and Julian Stevens (1st).

One additional JV-highlight for me was a last second takedown from Pavel Kardash to earn a come from behind victory – who as a bonus beat an Osseo wrestler in the process.  Very exciting stuff for Pavel!

The Varsity weights where strong and deep – with ranked wrestlers getting seeded outside the top six in multiple weights.  It was a good day for the Crimson – with all five competitors wrestling in the placement round.  Final placements included Runner-Up Max Johnson; 3rd place finishers Connor Peterson, Ben Schultz, and Luis Haro; and sixth place finisher Andrew Toms.  Each wrestler did some impressive things but I believe all five wrestlers also left the tournament with some things to work on – which is exactly why we seek out top competition like this.

Looking forward to getting back to work and seeing the team continue improving this week.  Here are the details you'll need for the week ahead.

Week 10 Practice/Meet Schedule:

Monday, 1.24 – Practice:  Weight Room at 2:10p; Wrestling room at 3:10p.

Tuesday, 1.25 – Practice:  Wrestling room at 3p.

Wednesday, 1.26 – Practice:  Weight Room at 2:10p; Wrestling room at 3:10p.

Thursday, 1.27 – Practice:  Wrestling room at 3p.

Friday, 1.28 – Home vs. Blaine.  Schedule is as follows:

 5p - Weigh-ins (Wrestlers to the school by 4:45p).

6p – JV

7p – Varsity begins (or whenever JV is completed).

Saturday, 1.29 – We once again have two tournaments this weekend.  However, this Saturday almost the entire team will be at South St. Paul with our two 9th grade state qualifiers competing at the 9th grade state tournament.  Details for each tournament is as follows:

Varsity/JV – At South St. Paul for an individual Tournament.  Bus leaves at 7a.  Wrestling is set to begin at 10a.

9th Grade State Tournament (Thomas Schlangen and Chuck Langama) – At Champlin Park High School.  There is no bus to this event – Chuck and Thomas will meet at Champlin Park.  We have not yet received specifics on weigh-in times but in years past I believe they have been from 7a – 8a with wrestling starting around 9a.  If that is the case again this year we will plan on the coaches and wrestlers meeting at Champlin Park senior high at 7:15a.  Details to be communicated as we receive them.

Mat Boss Video Access:

Many wrestlers are now watching their matches on Mat Boss each week – which is awesome!  This is a great opportunity for kids to learn from their matches and improve at a much faster rate than would otherwise be possible.  Watching back matches can be a great learning tool and is highly encouraged.  This is how that is done:

Here is a video showing you how to gain access to your matches:

Sports Engine, Facebook Page and Future Communication:

Lastly please download the Sports Engine App and sign up to receive future communications.  Parents and wrestlers can each sign up to receive future communications and schedule changes through the Sports Engine app by going to Crimson-Wrestling.com.  If you have any challenges with this please text me your email address at 763-913-0601 and I’ll make sure you are added to the app portion.  Please let me know if you have any questions with this as we will use this app for communications throughout the season.

Also, I often post fun pictures or related articles on the Maple Grove High School Wrestling Page on Facebook (along with this article).  If you are a Facebook user please like our page.  Thanks!

Technique Video of the Week:

Shot stopped positions continue to offer opportunities for improvement.  Here are a couple short videos that can easily help many of our wrestlers understand these positions better – hopefully leading to winning the positions and ultimately to close matches.

Can’t believe we are already in the last week of January!  Getting down to crunch time.  Each week is becoming increasingly important.  We are planning to put it all together at the right time and each match is giving us an indicator of where we are at and what we can still improve on.  The next few weeks are going to be a lot of fun.

As always let me know if anybody has any questions.
