Crimson Wrestlers, Managers, and Families-
Week Seven/Eight Recap:

The last two weeks we’ve wrestled 8 duals – including 3 conference duals and 1 section dual.  We finished 1-0 against our section opponent, 2-1 in the conference, and 4-4 overall.  More importantly, significant improvements have been evident throughout the roster.

For those who have been in our practice room – that’s not a surprise.  This is a hardworking and focused group.  Our guys continue to have impressive practices every day.  Those who have been at practice consistently are improving at a remarkable rate.  In the last two weeks we’ve seen first year wrestler Cole Cyrzan win his first Varsity match and fellow first year wrestler Rufus Bartee look like a Varsity Veteran with multiple victories.  Some of our guys continue to dominate and, in many cases, seem to be widening the gap on their competition.  The wrestlers who had the most success include Max Johnson and Ben Schultz who finished the two-week stretch 8-0; Luis Haro finished 6-0; and Connor Peterson finished 7-1.

I’ve also been impressed by the many JV wrestlers who continue to show up every day and just keep accomplishing our goal of getting better every time we step on the mat.  Especially considering the physical and mental adversity they’ve endured due to being without in-person school (no busing to the school, etc.).  At Saturday’s Mounds View Tournament, we had two Champions (Grant Sandell and Chuck Langama) along with three wrestlers who finished 2-1 (Jackson Neighbors-Rahkola, Jayden Waste, and James Engle).

Good things are happening!  So many of our wrestlers have so much to be proud of.  Those who have committed to being their best are seeing the fruits of their labor.  This week will be another great opportunity for all wrestlers in attendance to find yet another level.  With no shortage of strong competition coming our way it will also be another great opportunity for us to see where we’re at and apply what we learn.  Should be another chance for to grow into the best individuals and team we can be.

Here are the details you'll need for the week ahead.

Week 9 Practice/Meet Schedule:

Monday, 1.17 (No School) – Practice:  Wrestling room at 9a.

Tuesday, 1.18 – Practice:  Weight Room at 2:10p; Wrestling room at 3:10p.

Wednesday, 1.19 – Practice:  Wrestling room at 3p.

Thursday, 1.20 – At Anoka.  The schedule for the night is as follows:

4:15p – Bus Leaves.

5p - Weigh-ins.

6p – JV

7p – Varsity begins (or whenever JV is completed).

Friday, 1.21 – Practice:  Wrestling room at 3p.

Saturday, 1.11 – We have two tournaments this weekend.  All wrestlers should be competing at one tournament or the other.  The Varsity and JV (including all 7th, 8th, and 9th that are not competing at 9th grade sections) will be at East Ridge while individuals wrestling at 9th grade sections will be at Rogers.  The 9th grade tournament only allows one wrestler per team per weight so we will have wrestle offs on Tuesday for all weights that have more than one wrestler that would like to compete.  We will have two separate buses with details as follows:

Varsity/JV – At East Ridge for an individual Tournament.  Bus currently scheduled to leave at 7a.  I haven’t not received specifics as of yet for the weigh-in times or start time.

9th Grade Individual Sections – At Rogers.  Bus leaves at 7a.  Weigh-ins are at 7:50a with wrestling beginning at 9:30a.

Mat Boss Video Access:

Many wrestlers are now watching their matches on Mat Boss each week – which is awesome!  This is a great opportunity for kids to learn from their matches and improve at a much faster rate than would otherwise be possible.  Watching back matches can be a great learning tool and is highly encouraged.  This is how that is done:
Here is a video showing you how to gain access to your matches:

Sports Engine, Facebook Page and Future Communication:

Lastly please download the Sports Engine App and sign up to receive future communications.  Parents and wrestlers can each sign up to receive future communications and schedule changes through the Sports Engine app by going to Crimson-Wrestling.com.  If you have any challenges with this please text me your email address at 763-913-0601 and I’ll make sure you are added to the app portion.  Please let me know if you have any questions with this as we will use this app for communications throughout the season.

Also, I often post fun pictures or related articles on the Maple Grove High School Wrestling Page on Facebook (along with this article).  If you are a Facebook user please like our page.  Thanks!

Technique Video of the Week:

While we are showing great improvement, there are a couple small adjustments with our attacks and finishes that we will focus on making. Here are a few videos I really like that should help our guys get to and finish our leg attacks.:

  1. Shot/Countershot (Garrett Garness):
  2.

  1. High-C Finishes (Ty Eustice):
  2.
  3.

Should be some fun matches this week!  Looking forward to utilizing all four practice to get better, and then seeing an improved team in action Thursday and Saturday.

As always let me know if anybody has any questions.
