Wrestlers, managers, and wrestling families,

Welcome to the 2021 – 2022 wrestling season!  So excited to get the ball rolling and get back on the mats with a traditional schedule planned!  There are so many reasons to be optimistic about what is in store for the next three months.

There are a few changes that should be a positive to our program.  We’ve added new coaches including a new Co-Head Coach David Schorn.  We’ve also added assistants Ross Lefebvre, Eddie Kilgard, and AJ Aitkin who are first time Crimson coaches.  Brad Hozerland returns to the staff after a one-year hiatus.  The five new coaches will join returning coaches Ron Seubert, Mike Peterson, and myself to form a strong team of supports for our Crimson wrestlers.

On the Mat we are anticipating increased numbers thanks to a large group of 1st year wrestlers.  I don’t think we’ll be back to our Pre-Covid numbers but we should be in the 35-wrestler range.  This could be our biggest group of 7th graders ever (7 seventh graders) and our Freshman class is impressive as well (10 9th graders currently registered).  The 9th grade team – comprised of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders should be one of the biggest groups we’ve ever had – and that’s a great sign for the future.

We also have some very talented Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.  Our returners are a driven group and I expect they’ll do a great job of leading in all aspects.  This is a team that should be able to improve at a very fast rate!

Please make sure all wrestlers remember to bring (and wear) their masks as they need to be worn until we begin practicing.  Below is the Maple Grove Wrestling Schedule for a VERY BUSY week 1:

Practices:

Monday, Nov. 22nd - Weight room at 2:15p with practice beginning in the wrestling room at 3:15p.  High-school wrestlers should plan on lifting right after school from 2:15p to 3:10p at least twice a week if they don’t need to spend the time with a teacher or devote that time to school work.  Practices will typically go until about 4:45p.

Tuesday, Nov. 23rd – Wrestling room from 3p – 4:45p.  We will do Equipment Check out right after practice.  Only those fully cleared to participate will be able to check out equipment.

At 8p we will taking our poster picture.  Typically, it’s returning letter winners or wrestlers who won 10 or more matches on JV that are eligible to be in the poster picture.  Due to the oddity that was last season we are inviting all wrestlers who have completed at least one full season of High School wrestling.  The poster picture will be taken at ‘The Academy’ in Brooklyn Park.  The poster picture will be in a UFC Cage setting so attending wrestlers should wear either a MG Wrestling shirt or a black or white ‘Beater’ with shorts (fight shorts if they have them).  The address is 6840 Shingle Creek Pkwy STE #24, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430.  Please plan to be there by 7:45p.

Wednesday, Nov. 24th - Weight room at 2:15p with practice beginning in the wrestling room at 3:15p.

Thursday, Nov. 25th – Happy Thanksgiving.  No Practice.  We have traditionally have played a Thanksgiving Day fun game of touch football with the wrestling Alumni.  The Alumni will be there once again.  The game will be on the Fernbrook Turf fields at 9a for anyone who wants to play.  The game typically lasts an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.

Friday, Nov. 26th – Practice 9a – 10:45a.

Saturday, Nov. 27th – Change in practice timing:  The Saturday practice will be from 12p – 1:30p.  This will be an open practice where Friends and family members are invited and encouraged to attend and check out a practice.  We run 1 or 2 open practices per season so if you can make it this is a good opportunity to see what your wrestler is doing at practice every day.

Following practice, we will need to set up mats on Saturday for the Maple Grove Youth Tournament that is on Sunday, Nov. 28th.  Mat set-up should take 45 minutes to an hour – depending on how much help we have and how busy everybody remains throughout the process.  Parent help is welcome if parents are free.  Many hands make light work.

This tournament is a great opportunity for our newest wrestlers to get an idea of what a wrestling match looks like.  It’s also one of our biggest fundraisers of the season and helps us to be able to afford items such items at team apparel, out of town trips, and additional coaches.

Youth Tournament Details:

Sunday, Nov. 28th – Wrestling begins at 9a.  Wrestlers should be there at 8a.  Experienced wrestlers will be used to Ref while newer wrestlers will be used at scoring tables.  All will be trained in on their duties prior to the tournament beginning.  All wrestlers/managers will have a job to do as this tournament is the primary way we ask our wrestlers to contribute in an effort that will directly benefit their experience this season.

If parents are available to help with this process, we’ll take their help as well.  This could also be great practice for the help that we are going to need from the parents while our wrestlers compete at our home tournament on Dec. 11th.  Parent volunteer opportunities can be found here:  https://www.crimson-wrestling.com/news_article/show/1193249.

It will be a busy but fun first week.  Looking forward to getting the season started on the right foot!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Hopefully everybody has a wonderful Thanksgiving week and we’ll see you all soon.
